A young painter who cannot liberate himself from the influence of past generations is digging his own grave.
Is it possible to liberate ourselves? As much as I love the work of Matisse, I have to question him on this. So many times we think we are liberating ourselves and being original when really we are not. I don’t think influence can easily be discarded like an old coat. I think influence will still direct us, even subconsciously.
