Roger Ebert Review:
… Such films stand outside time. A man loves his family and wants to protect and support them. Society makes it difficult. Who cannot identify with that?

Mental Floss
Watched the film for the first time in ages the other day. I was introduced to it by my parents and it never ceases to delight. (Notify box won’t accept my tick so I’m not going to know when you reply!)

Hello my friend, always wonderful to hear from you! I’ve been going back through my video library, digging into the Criterion collection and this one floated to the top. Often in top 10 lists by various directors, it begged to be re-seen. It has been in and out of style for nearly 70 years but for me remains a powerful statement on how a man deals with societal and moral questions. I hope you do see my reply.
